Welcome to the Community Garden, a place where growth happens in more ways than one. What started as an empty space has become a thriving garden where fresh produce is grown, programs are built, and individuals are given the opportunity to learn, work, and contribute in meaningful ways.
As you explore, you’ll learn more about our story, our mission, the people behind the work, and how the garden continues to create impact through both its products and its purpose.
The Community Garden is a nonprofit program under Think Ability that grows produce, plants, and opportunities. It serves as a working garden where fresh, locally grown products are cultivated while providing hands-on job training and employment for individuals with developmental disabilities.
Through daily operations, services, and community engagement, the garden creates a space where people can work, learn, and connect, all while supporting a larger mission of inclusion and independence.
Our Mission
Our mission is to cultivate opportunity.
To create meaningful employment, build independence, and cultivate a more inclusive community through agriculture, education, and shared experiences.
Through hands-on work and real responsibilities, we empower individuals with developmental disabilities to build skills, gain independence, and take pride in meaningful employment. At the same time, we promote sustainability, community connection, and access to fresh food.
Our Story
The Community Garden began with a simple but powerful idea.
In 2017, a group of volunteers came together to transform an unused parking lot into something that could serve a greater purpose. With shovels, wheelbarrows, and a shared vision, they created a space where growth could happen for both plants and people.
Over time, the garden evolved into a fully functioning program where individuals with developmental disabilities take on active roles in daily operations. From planting seeds to serving customers, every part of the process is hands-on and meaningful.
Today, the garden continues to grow as a place rooted in inclusion, purpose, and community impact.
How We Support the Think Ability Mission
The Community Garden is one of Think Ability’s working programs, directly supporting its mission to empower individuals with disabilities.
Transparency and trust
Everyone deserves clear, honest information about their food. We are committed to transparency, making it easy to understand where food comes from, how it’s made, and its impact on people and the planet.
Empowerment through knowledge
Knowledge is the first step towards change. By offering accessible insights, we empower people to make food choices that align with their health, values, and sustainability goals
Inclusivity and accessibility
Food literacy should be for everyone, regardless of background, age, or education. We create a welcoming platform that makes understanding food easy and enjoyable for all.
Community and connection
Food brings us together. We’re building a diverse community across Europe where people can connect, share, and celebrate the rich culture and stories behind food.
Solutions and positive action
We believe in the power of action. By focusing on real-world solutions, we encourage individuals and communities to take positive steps towards a healthier and more sustainable food system.
Our Team
Led by Kyle McKain, Community Garden Manager, the garden is supported by job coaches who guide daily operations and skill development.
The heart of the team is made up of individuals with developmental disabilities who carry out the day-to-day work. From planting and harvesting to customer service and operations, they are the driving force behind the garden.
